Multichrom, LLC (Multichrom Ltd) produces two types of multicapillary chromatographic columns with different stationary liquid phases (SLP), namely, the straight multicapillary columns of various dimension-types and the coiled multicapillary columns. The multicapillary columns are glass rods of a hexagonal cross-section pierced by a great quantity of parallel capillaries, whose inner surface is covered with a liquid stationary phase layer. Usually multicapillary columns contain from 917 to 4447 identical capillaries with a diameter of 20 to 80 μm. The distance between opposite facets of cross-section D will be further referred to as the diameter of a multicapillary column.

There are the straight multicapillary columns with following dimension-types:

Length - from 40 to 250 mm (at the customer’s option);
-
Diameter of multicapillary column, D - between 2 and 5 mm;
-
Diameter of column capillaries, d - between 25 and 80 μm.
The straight multicapillary columns are delivered to customer as simple glass rods or as such rods enclosed hermetically with the help of a silicone sealant within protective stainless steel tubes. The multicapillary columns in protective tubes can be used at temperatures of no more than 200-2100C.
The coiled multicapillary columns have following main features:
diameter of capillaries 40 μm (d);

Diameter of multicapillary column, D - 2 mm;

Diameter of capillaries, d - 40 μm;

Quantity of capillaries - 912 - 1261;
- Length of multicapillary column - 1 m;

Diameter of a coil - 118 ±2 mm.
For safe operation with the coiled multicapillary column it is placed into a special cassette protecting the column. The cassette is supplied with fused silica capillaries 0.6 mm in outer diameter or with fittings 1/16" (Swagelok 10-32VHF) for connecting to injectors and detectors of a chromatographic system.
A type and thickness of a stationary liquid phase film applied on a multicapillary column are determined by a customer according to the list (see below) or are chosen by our specialists for a specific analysis.
Basic used types of the stationary liquid phases (SLP) are nonpolar OV-1 (SE-30) and OV-5 (SE-54); low-polar OV-20, OV-35; intermediate-polar OV-215, OV-1301 (OV-624), OV-1701, SKTFT-50X, OV-225 and polar Carbowax 20M.

Fittings for connecting multicapillary columns
For straight multicapillary columns
Multicapillary columns are sealed in fittings with the help of silicone O-rings enclosed.
Fused silica capillaries are sealed in fittings with the help of graphite ferrules enclosed.
A seal for a tube with the outer diameter OD=1/16" is not supplied.
Figure I shows parts of the fitting FSS-2-0.4 (a) and its appearance (ready-assembled) (b) for connecting the straight multicapillary column 2 mm in a diameter to a fused silica capillary.
Figure II demonstrates parts of the fittings FSS* and FST* (a) and their appearance (ready-assembled) (b) for connecting the straight multicapillary columns in protective tubes and without them to fused silica capillaries.

For coiled multicapillary columns
The fittings are included in construction of the cassette for the coiled multicapillary columns. The coiled multicapillary column and fused silica capillaries are sealed in fittings by means of graphite ferrules.
Seals for tubes with the outer diameter OD=1/16" are not supplied.
